Solar BESS Feasibility Study Checklist for Project Developers and EPC Contractors

Solar BESS Feasibility Study

A solar-plus-storage project requires careful evaluation of solar generation, battery sizing, grid connectivity, project costs and operating requirements. A solar BESS feasibility study helps developers determine whether the proposed system can meet its objectives before major procurement and construction commitments are made.

What should a solar BESS feasibility study include?

A complete assessment should address the following areas:

1. Solar resource and site assessment

Review the site location, solar irradiation, usable land, shading, terrain, expected generation and electrical infrastructure.

2. Battery sizing and configuration

Define the required battery power in MW, energy capacity in MWh, discharge duration, usable energy, efficiency, degradation assumptions and charging strategy.

3. Grid integration

Evaluate the point of interconnection, transformer capacity, export limits, protection, power quality and applicable utility requirements.

4. CAPEX and financial analysis

Estimate the cost of battery equipment, PCS, civil works, electrical systems, controls, installation and commissioning. Assess potential savings or revenue using transparent assumptions.

5. Safety and lifecycle planning

Consider fire protection, emergency response, maintenance, degradation, augmentation and end-of-life management.

6. DPR and engineering documentation

Prepare the agreed feasibility report, technical specifications, cost estimates, risk register and implementation plan.

Why independent technical assessment matters

A battery's nominal energy capacity does not automatically represent the energy that can be delivered to a load. Conversion losses, operating limits, auxiliary consumption and degradation affect usable output and project economics.

The feasibility study should therefore compare alternative configurations and test how financial results change when electricity tariffs, battery prices, efficiency and operating assumptions vary.
